Situated in the historic district , downtown Apalachicola
Cotton was initially shipped down the Apalachicola River on flatboats. Two hundred sixty-six bales were shipped in 1822. The first steamboat sailed on the
river in 1828. That same year, "cotton town" was named West Point by the Legislative Council of the Territory of Florida.
It was incorporated in 1829 with an Intendant and four councilmen. It was finally named "Apalachicola" in 1831, and in 1882 became the county
seat.
